The UK has a fantastic tradition of using bingo to raise money for charity. Each year, thousands of pounds are raised by bingo halls and through community bingo events for good causes. In an example of the latter, a travel agency recently raised £1,650 for a hospice charity.

The staff at Hays Travel in the town of Exmouth ran the event over the bank holiday weekend and an impressive 130 people came to play at Exmouth Railway Club.

The money raised is being donated to Hospiscare, a charity that supports more than 2,000 people across Devon each year. It provides various services to those who suffer from life-limiting illnesses, including social activities, practical advice, pain relief, and specialist end-of-life care.

Speaking about the event, Aimee Harding, who works at Hays Travel, said:

“Hospiscare holds a strong place in our hearts here at Hays Travel in Exmouth, having helped family members and friends. We really wanted to raise money and thank them for the life-changing work they do throughout our community.”

Last week, we shared the news about Dartmouth Academy pupils organising a bingo for Borneo fundraiser, highlighting how bingo often blends fun with charitable causes.

A Hugely Successful Event

The area fundraiser for Hospiscare, Toni Hiscocks, was full of praise for the team at Hays Travel Exmouth:

“The bingo bonanza organised by Aimee and the team at Hays Travel Exmouth was a huge success. Their enthusiasm and determination to support us shows what kind and generous people they are. The team worked so hard planning and organising the event, raising a phenomenal amount of money for Hospiscare. We are thrilled with the vital funds they have raised, enabling local families to receive the specialist end-of-life care they need during the most difficult time.”

The event was clearly a hit with those who attended, with one player, Sue Metherell, describing it as a “lovely evening and a lot of fun”. She added, “Well done to all the staff at Exmouth Hays Travel for their hard work making it such a special evening.”

Each branch of Hays Travel is given a budget of £500 to spend on local fundraising and charity work. Over the last year, this has seen Hays Travel’s Local Community Partnership raise more than £142,642 for local charities.

Hospiscare’s Work for the Local Community

As mentioned, Hospiscare provides specialist care and support for those living with life-limiting illnesses to help them make the most of every day. Their services are designed to meet each person’s individual needs, whether that involves managing symptoms, providing end-of-life care, or offering practical and emotional support to patients and their families.

Hospicare’s community team works to help those who wish to remain at home. It offers regular visits to discuss medication and care preferences, ensuring individuals feel comfortable and supported throughout their illness. When more intensive care is needed, patients can be referred to the specialist ward in Exeter. It is a short-stay unit that provides a peaceful environment where patients receive focused attention from a dedicated team, with access to complementary therapies and a relaxing garden.

Hospiscare also provides a support helpline for patients, families, and carers to access advice and guidance when needed. The charity’s services go beyond physical care, with a spiritual care team available around the clock that can provide emotional and cultural support. There is also a special service for those affected by dementia. The charity can send Admiral Nurses to give specialist care to help patients live positively and connect with additional resources.

The charity also works to help those affected by the health of a loved one. Hospiscare offers a range of services for friends and family, including bereavement support, relaxation therapies, and practical advice. The aim is to ensure that everyone involved receives the care they need.

All of Hospiscare’s services are provided free of charge, which is why fundraising events such as the Hays Travel bingo evening are so important.
