New plans have been put forward to convert the Buzz Bingo in Scunthorpe into a self storage facility.
Last year, permission was denied for a separate application to convert the bingo hall near Brigg Road into a self-storage facility. Planning permission was previously denied due to the loss of an essential community facility, as it’s the only remaining bingo hall in town.
However, now another application has been made, this time by the London-based company Zirconia Trading Ltd. As part of the planning application, a document was submitted explaining in great detail why the site is no longer viable as a bingo venue. The rise of online bingo sites may have contributed to this shift, as more players choose to enjoy the convenience of playing from home.
However, a spokesperson for Buzz has said that it has a lease on the building until 2027.
The latest application for planning permission for a self-storage facility at the bingo hall is extremely detailed. In it, the developer says that the landlord has looked into options with a number of operators but found that “there is no demand”. The application also argues that there is no demand for a community facility as large as the bingo hall.
Buzz Bingo is the current tenant and a document in the application argues that the landlord has considered it unviable since a change in lease. It states:
“The bingo hall is currently let to Buzz Bingo on a flexible basis further to their termination of the lease 2022. This informed the landlord that their business was unviable in Scunthorpe. They currently occupy on a flexible tenant favourable basis, to prevent the property being vacant.”
However, when asked to comment, Buzz Bingo made it clear that they have no immediate desire to shut down the bingo hall:
“We have a lease in place for our Scunthorpe club until 2027. We are pleased to play our part in the local community, welcoming our valued customers and providing a vibrant friendly space for everyone to enjoy.”
The conversion to a self-storage facility would be carried out by Pod Architects if permission is granted, and they argue that this “will allow for several million pounds worth of investment” in the venue.
Currently, the Buzz Bingo Club in Scunthorpe opens its doors to players every day and stays open until midnight on weekends. It runs several sessions a day with some huge prizes up for grabs, including full house prizes of £500.
As a bingo operator licensed by the United Kingdom Gambling Commission UKGC, players can trust in the security and reliability of the club’s operations.
Players in the area can join the club for just £5 and new members can enjoy all their bingo for just £5 on their first and second visits. There are also food and drink offers for new members, with a burger or hotdog plus chips and a soft drink, tea or coffee for just £5. There is even a special offer for slots enthusiasts. On the first visit, anyone who puts £5 of credit into a slot machine will be given £10 to play with.
The club even hosts special events, with the Million Dollar Men show scheduled to take place in Scunthorpe on 23 November.
Visitors will find far more to enjoy, including a fully stocked bar and plenty of food. There are also special jackpots available to play for, which means that a simple trip to the bingo could turn into an event to remember.
When the application to convert the bingo club was made last year, it very quickly garnered objections from members of the public. For instance, one person argued that bingo is “a popular part of the local community and a key leisure and entertainment facility in the town”. They went on to say that “A storage facility would not add benefit to the community and there is ample waste ground to build one elsewhere in the town.”
It seems highly likely that such objections will be put forward once again, so bingo players in Scunthorpe should not assume the worst.
