It’s well known that bingo is a truly social game and as such, it can do a lot to help people avoid feelings of loneliness and isolation. However, while bingo is not an expensive game to run or play, it does cost money. That is why it is such good news that the Marsden Building Society Charitable Foundation is awarding a £2,990 grant to Colne Citadel to help fund bingo sessions.

While more often, the game of bingo is used as a fundraiser for charitable causes, this case is different – a charity is providing funding to support bingo sessions themselves.

Colne Citadel aims to provide a “safe, caring environment in which to socialise” and the charity has said that it is hoping the bingo sessions will benefit local people aged 50 and over by giving them the chance to participate in a fun and social activity.

With the help of the funding, the charity will be able to continue running its bingo sessions over the winter months. Each week, roughly 32 people come to play and they are able to enjoy three rounds of bingo together with a hot meal, drinks, and desserts.

Speaking about the decision to award the grant, the chief executive of Marsden Building Society, Rob Pheasey, said:

“It’s a pleasure to support Colne Citadel in providing a valuable and popular activity for over 50s living in our area. By providing a welcoming and inclusive space, these bingo sessions offer attendees the opportunity to connect with others, engage in enjoyable activities, and experience a sense of belonging. This initiative aligns with Marsden’s aim to give back to the communities we serve and make a positive impact on the lives of our neighbours.”

Jolene Cooper, assistant centre manager at Colne Citadel, added:

“We’re a charity community centre and this generous donation will help support our aim to reduce social isolation and improve well-being.”

The Work of the Marsden Building Society Charitable Foundation

The Marsden Building Society Charitable Foundation was set up to further the Society’s commitment to building better local communities. It provides financial support to local initiatives in order to assist those in need across Lancashire. Each year, the Foundation provides funding to projects that promote financial well-being, inclusivity, and improve local environments.

The Foundation’s work demonstrates its broader commitment to supporting communities beyond helping members save money and own homes. It has a philosophy of giving back to the community and creating opportunities for as many people as possible. Its focus on financial well-being involves encouraging responsible money management through education and resources. Fostering inclusivity means supporting vulnerable groups and creating a sense of belonging. Improving local environments includes enhancing public spaces and regenerating areas to benefit residents.

To achieve these goals, the Foundation is aiding several initiatives, including helping school children develop employment skills, helping carers cope with the demands of the job, and funding social activities, such as the bingo at Colne Citadel.

How the Colne Citadel Supports the Community

Colne Citadel is a charity based in a small community centre located in Market Place, Colne Town Centre. The building was originally constructed by the Salvation Army in 1908, and it was later used as a citizen’s advice bureau. Today, it houses the Citadel, which is dedicated to improving the lives of local residents by reducing social isolation and providing a welcoming, supportive environment that is accessible to all.

The Citadel aims to provide a warm and friendly space where everyone is welcome. It focuses on building trust, developing friendships, and helping visitors improve their self-esteem and confidence.

The charity provides a range of valuable services to the community, including peer support groups, a free professional counselling service, and access to resources for those dealing with addiction. It also offers volunteering opportunities for individuals looking to give back to their community. In addition to its support services, the Citadel provides a safe and inclusive environment for socialising, along with facilities such as a training room available for hire.
