Bingo players in Dartmouth are in for a treat thanks to a number of special bingo nights that are being organised by students at Dartmouth Academy over the coming months.

The school, which is part of Education South West, has announced upcoming bingo events at The View on 4th October, 8th November, and 10th January. At each event, doors will open at 6:30 pm and the games will begin at 7 pm. Players will have the chance to win cash prizes and participate in a special jackpot game. There will also be raffles to enter, along with tea, coffee and cake to enjoy.

All profits from the bingo nights will go to helping pupils at the school, who will also be volunteering to help run the events and fulfil their dreams of going on a trip to Borneo in the summer of 2025. Borneo, the third-largest island in the world, is located in Southeast Asia’s Malay Archipelago and is famous for its spectacular nature, including rainforests, orangutans, and diving.

Ethical School Trips to Improve the World

The trip to Borneo will be organised in conjunction with Camps International, which helps schools arrange ethical trips on which the students can make a real impact. It aims to connect students with real-world experiences and people and hopes that the trips will have a positive influence on the participants and inspire them for the future.

Speaking about the student’s efforts, Paul Girardot, the principal at Dartmouth Academy, said:

“I am so proud of the work our pupils are doing to make their dream of visiting Borneo next year a reality. I do hope the local community will come and support them by attending our bingo evenings this term. Hopefully, it will be Lucky Sevens for everyone involved.”

Matthew Shanks, the CEO of Education South West, added:

“It’s great to hear that Dartmouth Academy is hosting more Bingo events this term. Not only is this a brilliant way for the community to get together, it’s a fun way to fundraise for a once in a lifetime trip for local children. At Education South West, we believe that academic success is just one element of education. Experiences that go beyond the classroom, give children the chance to develop life skills, cultural understanding and a worldly perspective.”

Borneo Bingo Expeditions

If the pupils raise enough money, they will embark on a Borneo Trek Expedition next summer. According to Camps International, they will experience off-grid living as they trek through the heart of the Bornean jungle and work to protect orangutan habitats.

The description of the experience on the Camps International website reads:

“On this once-in-a-lifetime adventure, you’ll get the opportunity to explore the unique jungle ecosystem and unexplored tropical wilderness on an adventurous 5 day trek. You’ll play an active part in helping to protect this important environment through long-term conservation projects. There will be plenty of time to immerse yourself in the traditional culture too, as you live in the heart of a rural village and work alongside local people to support community development.”

Perhaps while on the expedition, the students could play a game of Borneo Rainforest Bingo. There are a number of bingo cards available online featuring pictures of the different animals found on the island. As the students are unlikely to have access to online bingo sites during the trip and are likely too young to play legally, this is a fun way for them to engage with the game that helped fund their experience while furthering their appreciation of the surrounding wildlife.
