Warwickshire County Council’s library service has announced a fantastic scheme for those who enjoy both bingo and reading.

The Warwickshire Libraries launch Book Bingo, a reading challenge for adults that will be running throughout the year and culminate in a celebratory event for participants in December. The aim is to encourage people to read books from twelve different categories that are laid out on a bingo card.

Each time a player completes a book, either in physical, eBook or audiobook form, they can cross off the category on their Book Bingo card. Once the player has achieved a full house, they can collect a badge and will receive an entrance into a prize draw to win £100 National Book Tokens. The book tokens are gift cards that can be used in a huge number of bookshops across the UK and Ireland. There are two prizes up for grabs, one for library customers and one for library staff.

Anyone who is a member of Warwickshire Libraries and is aged at least 16 can join the Book Bingo reading challenge, and it is possible to sign up both online and at a local library.

Warwickshire County Council customer spokesperson Yousef Dahmash said:

“Book Bingo is a great opportunity for adults to enjoy the many benefits of reading, from exploring new reading material and using the imagination, to discovering new interests and being able to connect with others.”

Unfortunately, the game is only available to those who are based in Warwickshire; however, it is worth checking with your local library service to see if they are offering anything similar. Of course, there is nothing to stop you from checking the best online bingo sites for any interesting games.

Forming a Book Bingo Community

Reading is, by its nature, a solitary activity; however, the Warwickshire County Council is working hard to make Book Bingo as social as possible. They have created a Book Bingo group on Facebook where those taking part can join discussions about what they have been reading and encourage others to achieve their reading goals.

Furthermore, they are encouraging those who are in reading groups to join in and have made a number of recommendations for each category from the Reading Group Collection.

The Book Bingo Card

As mentioned, there are twelve categories on the Book Bingo card, and each helpfully comes with recommendations attached. Here are the categories:

The Warwickshire library service website provides detailed information on all the categories included in the challenge. Best of all, all the books that they recommend are available at the library, so participating in the challenge won’t cost you a penny.

Creating Your Own Book Bingo Game

Of course, you can try to create your own Book Bingo game. There are various ways of doing so. You could take the same approach as Warwickshire County Council and find a group of friends to challenge with a prize for the first to complete all categories.

Alternatively, you could create a Book Bingo card of your own, perhaps with categories such as “based on a true story”, “set in a place you wish to visit”, “features a character with your name”, and so on, and find friends to compete with. If you are a member of any local reading group, then perhaps you could interest them in taking part.
