Gavin & Stacey Becomes UK’s Most-Watched Scripted Show

Gavin & Stacey is truly one of the UK’s most-loved television shows. The finale, which aired on Christmas Day, became the UK’s most-watched scripted show across all broadcasters and streaming platforms since records began in 2002.

According to the latest data, the episode has already attracted an incredible 19.3 million viewers, smashing the show’s previous record set by its 2019 Christmas special, which reached 18.5 million viewers over 28 days.

The 2024 finale took the top spot on Christmas Day, with 12.3 million overnight viewers, the biggest Christmas Day audience since 2008. With its total viewership still steadily climbing, the finale is on track to surpass 20 million viewers, which will undoubtedly cement the show’s place as a British cultural phenomenon. Furthermore, 4.2 million of its audience were aged 16-34, making it the most-watched scripted show for young viewers in over two decades.

James Corden and Ruth Jones, the show’s creators, have expressed their gratitude to fans, stating:

“We are completely overwhelmed by the audience response to our show and to these astonishing viewing figures. Gavin & Stacey really does belong to the audience and we are beyond thrilled that so many people enjoyed watching it this Christmas. A huge thank you to Charlotte Moore and the BBC for backing us these past 17 years.”

Charlotte Moore, the BBC’s Chief Content Officer, added:

“The numbers are truly outstanding, unprecedented even! It’s the show the entire nation has been talking about over the last week so it’s no surprise that it’s not only smashed its own record but has become the UK’s biggest scripted show! Ruth Jones and James Corden’s creation is a true homegrown success story, and their finale is a comedy masterpiece. It’s made us laugh and cry together in a way that only Gavin & Stacey can.”

The Gavin & Stacey Bingo Card

As part of its promotions for the show, the BBC even released a Gavin & Stacey bingo card ahead of the Christmas Day episode. If you are yet to see the show and are looking for away of making it even more enjoyable, then it is the perfect solution.

In place of numbers, the card contains things such as “A big night out”, “Lush”, “That fishing trip…”, “Neil the baby”, “Tidy”, “Big fat Sue”, and “Gwen makes an omelette”.

The bingo card can be used when watching any episode, so while the nation’s favourite show may have come to an end, you and your friends can still gather round to watch it together with your favourite game.
